i am new to this site and hoping for some advice from someone who has been through this same hell. i have a focus of the left temporal lobe. two years ago i spent 4 days in the hospital after having several grand mals. i had not had seizures since childhood. my neurologist back home was constantly tweaking my meds and after i moved to kansas last year my new doctor added depakote to the regime. i felt like i was losing my mind. my memory just crumbled and my husband saw a huge change in personality... basically i no longer had one, just a zombie. i was taking 400 mg of tegretol 2 x a day, depakote er 250 mg 1x a day, clorazapate 2x a day, butalbital 1x a day and prozac 2x a day. so months ago i tapered myself off it all because i would rather feel anything than nothing. and i stopped going to my new neurologist because he was a total arse who lacked an ounce of compassion. i have not had another grand mal, but i have small "spells" that worry me. could these be a precursor to something big? i would rather just live with the weird feelings than the mind numbing side effects but i worry.

Re: side effects
Sun, February 19, 2006 - 9:34 AMAll the best to you in your new medication-free "management." I also discontinued anti-seizure medication, because it seemed better to risk the seizures than to operate in a perpetual state of sub-consciousness. I've beed medication-free for about five years now, and though I have had seizures, wouldn't go back on the meds--not unless they started becoming a much more frequent occurrence.
Yes, I also get the "spells." I finally found a neurologist I can work with and who supports (though he does not wholly approve of) my med-free approach. He says that these "spells" can be "little seizures" that don't affect the whole body. I also get what I call "onset symptoms"--I feel like I'm about to have a grand mal, but I don't. This now happens to me quite often, and I am learning to take it in stride.
I'm 46 now, and I found out about my seizure condition when I was 25. In those 20 years, many of the medications and surgical procedures that were "highly recommended" in 1985 are now "not recommended." I think it's very important to be conscious and to take the day-to-day recommendations of our profit-oriented, malpractice-phobic medical profession with a very big grain of salt. I check in with my neurologist every year or two to hear about the latest procedures and meds, but it's been a while since I had the impulse to try one!
Managine seizures without drugs requires patience and support, but I really think it's worth it. I've been lucky in the sense that I've been able to work mainly from home. I live in New York City and "onset symptoms" can be kind of scary on a crowded subway!
I hope things work out with you. -

Sun, March 19, 2006 - 11:44 PMi have always had little auras before having a seizure...controversial as it may seem smoking medical marijuana has been a blessing...for some people thats the only thing thats ever worked for them. -

Mon, March 27, 2006 - 12:58 AM"controversial as it may seem"... it's a helluva lot better then screwing up your meds by drinking too much alcohol... and with all of the available strains these days, it can be a very 'kind' experience.

i also have a seizure focus in my left frontal lobe and as of april 1st it's been 3 years since my first seizure. i was also hospitalized. and i had vns surgery (which i dont recommend - it actually made me sicker) why did ur doctor perscribe prozac? were you taking this before you found out you were epileptic? i met a young lady in the epilepsy ward in the hospital and no meds had worked for her except for smoking weed. it may be worth a try. i hope things get better for you. <3
